The purpose of the external relations project group is to amplify and support frontline community campaigns, collaborative research, and issues that EJ Working Group members are involved in, as well as to connect EJWG members and allies doing this work. Responsibilities are tailored to the individual partnership with a community group. This work with community groups may include: a) relationship building or learning efforts with with a particular organization, such as attending a volunteer day or teach-in or organizing an alternative spring break trip with Haas, b) facilitating media work that distributes and amplifies EJ campaign information or research findings to our network through listservs or social media platforms or tabling, c) inviting and platforming community leaders (as desired) as speakers, or through guest teaching on campus, or d) recruiting direct support for a partner organization (as desired by community partners).
2) EVENTS PROJECT GROUP
The purpose of the events project group is to help nurture welcoming spaces where people who are doing EJ work at Stanford can find each other and connect, as well as spaces where we can share our work, invite new folks to get involved, and learn together. Responsibilities include helping organize and support EJWG events (including event prep, support, and follow-up), directing individuals who want to get involved to a project group, and helping us keep our events calendar up-to-date. Primary: 1) A quarterly welcome back at the farm, 2) Winter EJWG leadership retreat at Jasper Ridge, and 3) EJWG workshops or lectures.
3) NEW SCHOOL PROJECT GROUP
The purpose of the new school project group is to develop and advance our vision for embedding EJ in the research, education, and community impact in the new school for the purpose of restoration and repair. Responsibilities include tracking new school developments in our respective spaces; supporting any EJ hiring efforts through research, organizing, hosting, or otherwise; attending invited presentations, meetings, or new school events to represent the EJWG and our vision; participating in collaborative writing efforts to develop and fundraise for EJ in the new school; and exploring opportunities to create a community advisory board to guide our thinking and practice.
4) EJ EDUCATION PROJECT GROUP

Responsibilities include moving forward current EJ education efforts by EJ Working Group members. This work may involve working with key nodes on campus for EJ education work, including SSS engagement with high schoolers, Jasper Ridge DEI efforts expanding access to outdoor education, Stanford pipeline programs for underserved communities in K-12 and undergrad summer programs, Haas Center education programs on community-engaged research methodologies, Center for Teaching and Learning training programs for faculty and postdocs, and working on new school standards for sustainability education.
5) EJ COMMUNICATIONS & THE ARTS PROJECT GROUP
The purpose of the EJ communications and the arts project group is to advance EJ communication for inclusive science and social change at Stanford – in partnership with community-based organizations. Responsibilities include moving forward current EJ communication and culture change efforts by EJ Working Group members, as well as big-picture thinking about how to create more equitable and inclusive spaces for connecting community-academic partners in the new school. This project intersects with current initiatives at the Stanford Storytelling project, our existing EJWG Environmental Justice blog initiative, the Op-ed Project, nationally-recognized EJ communications work at Climate Justice Alliance, transformative arts-driven communication with the Stanford’s Institute for Diversity and the Arts (IDA), and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts effort on arts-based engagement for climate equity (YBCA 10 group). The workshops will lift up current community-academic partnerships occurring through the Haas Center with Partnerships for Climate Justice, the Intro to EJ course, an ongoing Human Planetary Health/EJ Working Group partnership, and other allied campus communities.
