1. "Air Quality and Health in San Francisco" by Ella Norman (2024) [ArcGIS Storymap in collaboration with Rise South City]
Exposure to air pollution can cause and worsen respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. This is especially a concern in frontline communities like South San Francisco, where residents are exposed to air pollution from the airport, freeways, and industrial activities. Community-based organizations in the Bay Area such as Rise South City are leading on responding to this issue, with Rise South City installing air quality monitors around South San Francisco to collect air quality data that can be used to engage the community and advocate for policy change.

My senior capstone project in Human Biology entailed creating an ArcGIS dashboard that visualizes this air quality data alongside data on the relative prevalence of health conditions linked to air pollution. This interactive map shows the connection between air pollution and health conditions in South San Francisco. It also includes explanations on how air pollution impacts health, the sources of air pollution in South San Francisco, and how residents can protect themselves against the effects of air pollution and get involved to address the sources of pollution.

The interactive map is available in English and Spanish and on both desktop and mobile view to promote accessibility. This map is intended to further Rise South City’s goal of educating community members in South San Francisco on local environmental justice issues and empowering them to take action.
